What brought you to Denholm?
It was completely by chance. I liked a LI post from Denholm and next minute one of the consultants had e-mailed me asking if I had ever considered a career in recruitment. I met with Nicki and John and some of the team and the rest is history as they say.
What do you specialise in?
I spent 10 years working in the media industry, so I specialise in all agency recruitment roles including account management, strategy, digital, traffic and production across digital, integrated, creative, advertising, brand and design agencies.
Tell us about a career highlight…
Being awarded a commendation at the 2016 Drum Recruitment Business Awards in the consultant of the year category. This was a huge achievement for me and really made me appreciate the fantastic candidates and clients I work with on a daily basis.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I’m a huge foodie so you’ll normally find me trying out new places to eat then taking pictures for my Instagram account which drives all my friends and family mad!
Tell us something that people would be surprised to find out about you.
I can name you all the local and regional newspapers across the UK. A skill I picked up from years of working in the media industry. It does still come in handy believe it or not. And if that’s not thrilling enough, I was a majorette for 13 years and competed at a professional level.

Celebrity Big Brother – don’t judge me!

What are you reading at the moment? Last film you saw?
Sadly, I’m currently reading my driving theory test book! The last film I watched was The Big Short.
What do you wish people knew about your job?
We’re not all bad and being a good recruiter is hard, there’s a lot more to it than you realise. You have to wear multiple hats every day – mum, big sister, counsellor, psychologist and even bad cop sometimes! We represent both clients and candidates so have to stay completely neutral which can be tricky sometimes but every day is exciting and being a recruiter certainly isn’t boring!
What’s the best part of working at Denholm?
The diverse nature of the role. No two days are the same. One day I might be helping a graduate break into the creative sector and giving them advice on their CV or portfolio and the next day I might be meeting with an agency to discuss growing their team or giving them advice on salary levels or job descriptions. My colleagues are also pretty amazing too, it’s such a supportive and collaborative agency and I know I can always ask for help or advice.
What advice would you give to someone thinking about a career recruitment?
Research the type of recruitment you want to get into. Do you want to be a generalist or a specialist? Generalists tend to work across multiple sectors and job functions so the focus tends to be on quantity rather than quality and can be very KPI driven. Specialists like Denholm focus on one sector and have a deep understanding of that landscape and everyone who operates in it so for us it’s definitely about quality over quantity and getting to know the candidates and clients we work with on a deeper level.
