Do what you love!
Now that another year is almost over, has your job made you better off than you were? Don’t limit your thinking to finances, also consider new skills you may have learned, promotions gained, increased networking opportunities, exposure to new technologies, etc.
Many of us see the end of year appraisal as a time for companies to judge our efforts, but remember this is a two-way process and in today's candidate-driven market, you should equally review whether your employer is helping you achieve your career goals or just paying the bills.
People choose jobs for a variety of reasons and external factors such as age and family responsibilities often dictate how much courage and flexibility we have. That said, if your current role doesn’t make you feel excited, empowered and downright proud, it’s probably time for a change.
You might want to grab a pen for this next bit.
What would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail?
What did you want to be when you were growing up?
What fuelled that ambition?
If money were no object, what would be your ideal role?
These questions aren’t as unrealistic as you think. Finland may be the first country in the world to test what its citizens would do if they were given a basic income instead of having to earn it.
As a starting point, think about what motivates you.
What do you love about your current job and those that have gone before?
If you could condense your role into one or two main activities, what would they be?
What are your proudest work moments so far?
