Innis & Gunn was born in a spark of originality, fuelled by the desire to walk a new path, to move beyond the everyday to something different, better, truly original. Our attitude is simple, it shapes everything we do and all that we are. We are all about the complete freedom to see the world differently, to think and act with innate originality. To be who we really are.
We believe the world is a better place when people can just be themselves. Their own authentic, imperfect, brilliant selves, in spite of self-doubt, not driven by a need to follow the trends and fashions that come and go. To be an original.
Our mission is to fuel a global movement of originality, creativity, passion, and purpose, through the beers we make, in the way we make them, and in the ways we celebrate the originality of others.
If you live your life honestly, happily, respectfully, imperfectly, and above all by just being you, then join us.
Be you, stay original.
Whilst the vast majority of craft brewers will sell their beer in local and sometimes national markets, there are few who could claim to be strong on the international stage. From the outset back in 2003 we saw the opportunity that building our brand internationally presented us with, and in 2019 30% of our volumes and 28% of our turnover was generated by our international business. Our home market, the UK, has also shown strong growth, delivering 14% volume growth and 14% turnover growth last year.
This performance has been fuelled by the impressive growth of Innis & Gunn Lager, the largest and most valuable craft beer in Scotland, and sustained marketing investment behind our brand proposition Be You. Stay Original.
This unique proposition of authenticity and originality inspires an independent, self-confident and progressive attitude to life, the attitude of a true original. It has allowed us to meaningfully connect with consumers and become the UK’s most recommended beer brand.
Reporting to the Commercial Director, this role will take ownership of all marketing and PR activity for the business in the UK and Internationally. The Director of Marketing will lead and develop the marketing team to deliver brand strategy for the key trading channels across core markets including, the On & Off trade, ecommerce/digital and the valuable High Street Retail business. The Director of Marketing will have full responsibility for budget spend (which is due to double in size over the next year) and as a member of the Exec Team, will contribute to influencing and shaping the wider business strategy.
With flexible home/remote-working – but with a minimum of 2 days p/w spent in Edinburgh – the Director of Marketing will be responsible for leading the development and implementation of long-term and annual brand strategies through a redeveloped Brand Positioning; implementing agreed brand strategies and building capability for a Digital First Marketing approach. To be considered, you will have a proven track record in marketing and brand leadership from within premium alcoholic drinks. With a strong preference for international/export brand management, you will have evidence of operating effectively at a strategic and board level, both as a curator and implementor of strategies. You will be a natural entrepreneur who can converse with business leaders, founders and investors with ease and authority.
Finally, at Innis & Gunn passion for what you do is everything. In return for your talents, you’ll receive a generous salary, 15% bonus potential, E-share Agreement, Relocation Fees (if appropriate), Pension, Life & Petrol Expenses.
As well as working in close collaboration with our clients, and the online marketplaces, we are active members of groups that have been established to combat illicit trade. These include the Scottish Anti-Illicit Trade Group, the European Intellectual Property Office, The Scottish Business Resilience Centre, the Anti-Counterfeiting Group, and the China Britain Business Council. Members of our senior management sit on the boards of ACID (Anti-Copying in Design), the Scottish Ministerial Trade Board, and the European Union Intellectual Property Office’s Observatory Panel for SMEs, amongst others.
Each team member nominates good causes or charities that are supported on both an individual and corporate basis. Wherever possible, we support the employee’s involvement whether through time or fundraising events.
We deliver purpose-driven work from an extremely welcoming environment near the City Centre. We actively encourage the responsible use of resources, from using public transport to reuse, recycling, and, of course, a minimal impact office environment. We have benefited from the advice of the Energy Saving Trust and Resource Efficient Scotland. Our waste contractor also provides us with a monthly report on volumes and types of material and the carbon emissions avoided through recycling.
Over 80% of our employees can walk or cycle to The Lair and, pre-pandemic, 10% were using public transport as their normal daily commuting mode. Without doubt, online meetings will replace considerable miles, going forward, saving resources, time and energy. Where possible, when possible, the train remains our preferred option.
Our people are our most important asset, and their mental well-being and happiness are core to our success. We love our diverse workforce, actively embrace flexible working (even pre-pandemic!) and encourage a healthy work-life balance. We have been recognised as one of the most diverse SME workplaces in the UK and are holders of the Scottish Business Pledge which exists to promote a fairer Scotland. We have also just been included in the 2021 Culture Leaders Top 25 – an accolade of which we are very proud!
We are a fully inclusive and nurturing employer and, despite being in tech, the majority of our team are women, leading to accolades in the Computing Magazine Women in IT Awards and the Amazon Growing Business Awards. We currently represent 15 nationalities and speak 20 languages. Age is no barrier, and we recruit for attitude, providing and encouraging appropriate learning and training for each and every role.
We are also proud members of IP Inclusive, a network of professionals working to make the intellectual property industry more diverse.
Our aim is to combat illicit online trade by identifying and removing counterfeits for sale. Counterfeits not only damage brands, their reputations, and revenues, but can cause significant harm to the end customer – whether as a fake toy or a fake medicine – and the consequences can be life threatening.
Counterfeiting is a significant economic and social issue.
The OECD reports that counterfeit and fake goods make up more than 3.3% of the world’s global trade. Those involved in the trade of counterfeits have been linked to people trafficking, prostitution, and drug dealing.
As such, reducing illicit trade is about much more than brand protection but also about human rights, safety, and social equity.
And this is what we do, every day.
