Our next conversation in the series features Lorraine Macdonald, Financial Controller of The Glenturret Distillery.
What is the biggest challenge facing the sector at present?
One of them is seeing businesses move away from the traditional finance function roles and moving towards strategic accounting and “value-add” tasks to support the wider business. Another is understanding where AI tools can be beneficial to the function and how best we can start to introduce them to our daily working lives.
What one thing makes you most proud?
Being recognised at the Scottish CFO Awards as “One to Watch”. There were some incredible award winners at the event and to be recognised amongst them made me proud of what I have achieved so far in my career.
What’s the most important risk you took and why?
It was making the leap from Finance Analyst at Bacardi to FC/CFO at Young Spirits. I had to quickly learn how to bring in-house a full finance function to a growing company, prepare financial statements from scratch which I hadn’t done since Uni, and support on integrating a new ERP system across the business. It gave me so much confidence in my ability to lead a finance function and I wouldn’t be where I am today if I hadn’t taken that risk!
Who inspires you in your career?
There are a few I could name, but I’m going to say my Granny Rena. She’s always the voice in my head telling me to grab every single opportunity that comes my way, whether it works out or not, it’s why I’ve made some integral moves in my career so far. She’s 84 yet continues to seek new opportunities to learn, it’s where I get my passion to keep on learning from and I hope I’m still as passionate and driven in my 80s.
What advice would you give to your younger self?
Always be curious, you can never ask too many questions!
